WELCOME HAYWOOD VOLUNTEER CENTER
UNITED WAY AND HAYWOOD VOLUNTEER CENTER
Welcome to United Way’s newest member agency -- the Haywood Volunteer Center. With the sluggish economy, volunteers are a valuable resource to fill agency needs. The Volunteer Center is a Mountain Projects program and relies upon fundraising exclusively for its financial support. The Center coordinates volunteer services to approximately 60 organizations in the community which depend on the work of volunteers to sustain their services to the citizens of Haywood County.
In addition to the coordination of volunteers, the center also provides the following services:
• The Senior Health Insurance Information Program of the North Carolina Department of Insurance for counseling recipients of Medicare and prescription drug plans. This service is conducted at no cost to the public.
• The Mountain Projects Wood Assistance Program for seniors in need of firewood for the cold winter months.
• The Haywood County District Attorney’s Office First Offender Program. First offenders are placed with participating agencies in order that they fulfill the court-ordered hours of community service.
The Center has three fundraising events every year. The first, in late spring, is the Taste of Chocolate. Local bakers, both professional and amateur, make their chocolate specialties to be judged by a community of peers. The night is a fun social event with door prizes, silent auction and entertainment. Tickets are sold to citizens to attend and taste the best chocolate in Haywood County. The Second fundraiser is the Human Race – a 5K run held in June each year. And the third fundraising event is a golf tournament held each fall.
If you wish to volunteer your time with a particular agency, or if you need assistance with your Medicare or prescription drug program, please call The Haywood Volunteer Center at 828-356-2833.
